The Planning Process in Ireland
In Ireland, the planning process gives people a chance to have their say on new developments in their community.
When a person applies for planning permission, their application is made public, and interested parties have five weeks to submit an objection (officially called an observation/submission). If you’re worried about traffic, environmental impact, or how a development might change your area or affect your property, this is your chance to raise concerns.
The local council reviews all objections/submissions before making a decision, usually within eight weeks. If permission is granted despite objections/submissions, you can appeal the Council decision to An Bord Pleanála, the national planning appeals board. Getting involved early and making a strong, well-supported case can make a real difference.
